The UK-Vietnam bilateral relationship has developed greatly since the establishment of full diplomatic relations in 1973, and now encompass a wide-range of issues, from high-level political contacts, through growing trade and investment links, cooperation against international crime and illegal migration, to a fast growing development assistance programme.

The British Government supports a variety of projects in Vietnam every year in line with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s strategic objectives.

Migration cooperation

The UK is keen to attract more visitors from Vietnam. In 2007, the British Embassy issued 6581 visas - a 19% rise compared to 2006. For the links to continue to grow, we need to tackle illegal migrants.

One of our objectives is to support Vietnam on achieving sustainable economic growth, with attention to progressive transition to a low carbon economy.
